Product Description
Procera was founded to share the very best of Africa with the world. Distilled in Nairobi, Kenya, their gins are the world’s first to use Juniperus Procera. The berries are handpicked from trees growing at an altitude of 2,200 meters just 55 kilometers from the distillery in Kijabe, a small town of just 2,000 people. With all other botanicals sourced from across Africa, Procera expresses the terroir of the African continent in every sip. Procera is Kenya’s first craft distillery.
Procera was dreamed up by a group of friends who asked why. Why does Kenya not have its own gin? And why have African Juniperus Procera berries never been used to make gin? From the beginning they believed that gins made with African Juniper could rival and surpass the very best in the world.
What is Juniperus Procera?
More than any other botanical, a gin’s juniper should define its character and reveal the true terroir of its origins. Procera Gin is named after the majestic Juniperus Procera tree, whose sun-drenched berries offer extraordinary flavor and quality. Growing wild in the highland forest of Kijabe to a height of more than 20 meters, the Procera tree is the only juniper species
indigenous to the southern hemisphere and encapsulates the heart and soul of Procera's gins. Juniper berries are handpicked at the end of the short rains with help from the local community, and when distilled, create the distinctive nutty and earthy flavors which characterize Procera Gin.
Fresh Juniper
Nothing compares to fresh, local produce, although nearly all the world’s gin makers use dried juniper sourced far from their distilleries. Procera Distilleries proximity to Kijabe, a mere 55 kilometers, allows them to distill fresh juniper. The fresh juice in Procera berries provides an integral component of their character and flavor profile. If you dry juniper you remove the soul and the true terroir of place. This is what sets Procera apart, with the vibrant soul of it's home continent captured in every sip.
Africa’s Bounty
While Juniperus Procera is the backbone of all their gins, the other African botanicals used play a pivotal role in making Procera so special. They have partnered with some of the continent’s most passionate and skillful farmers to source carefully selected botanicals that complement their juniper species perfectly. From the plains of Morocco in the north-west to the Indian Ocean islands of the south-east, Africa’s sun and soils yield natural produce of unparalleled quality and range, with each botanical adding its own unique character note to their gins.
The Process
Procera is distilled in a bespoke Müller 230L Aromat pot still by Master Distiller Roger Jorgensen, the unofficial godfather of craft distilling in Africa. Our botanicals are placed in a “pillowcase” and steeped in the spirit base at a warm maceration temperature of 40°C, which extracts the essential oils and natural fresh flavors without cooking them. No organic
materials are placed in the pot during distillation which accounts for Procera’s elegant texture and soft mouthfeel, while still delivering a rare intensity and complexity on the palate.
Sustainability Vision
A commitment to sustainability is at the core of Procera’s mission. They have a long-term vision to reforest the Kenyan highlands with Procera trees. Since their inception they have
planted one new tree per bottle sold. The distinctive vessels are crafted from 100% recycled glass, while at their distillery in Nairobi, they have introduced a pioneering, zero waste water system. Everything they do at Procera is driven by environmental responsibility and contributing to a sustainable future for the continent and the planet.
Glass Artisans
One of the very first things almost everyone comments on is the Procera bottle. Crafted by the brilliantly talented team at Kitengela Hot Glass, just an hour’s drive from the distillery, the
bottle represents traditional artisanship at its very best. No two bottles are identical, and each is hand engraved with its own unique production number. These bespoke craft vessels are
painstakingly hand-blown from recycled glass and are ideal for up-cycling once the gin has evaporated.
Craft Finishing
The beauty of a Procera bottle goes well beyond its exquisite glass. The gorgeous, hand carved stoppers are made by a collective of artisans in Kilifi on the Indian Ocean coast, whilst a hand-tied African leather strap around the bottle’s neck provides an elegant grip. The bottle’s neck tag is printed on recycled water hyacinth paper which helps reoxygenate Lake Victoria by removing this invasive species. The bottle’s defining quality is its simplicity: one piece of glass, one piece of wood, and one piece of leather, with no label to hide the artistry of the
liquid itself.
The Botanical Salts
Produced with cocktails in mind, the botanical salts are intended to further accentuate and lift the flavors of Procera in mixed drinks. They are made by combining the respective finely ground botanicals from each gin with Indian Ocean sea salt from Zanzibar. Whilst veering away from traditional gin garnishes, the salts are a more effective way of complementing Procera gin. Each bottle of Procera leaves the distillery with a small glass jar of botanical salt attached.
Procera Blue Dot Gin
