Smooth & Easy
William Grant & Sons, best known as the producer of Glenfiddich and Balvenie, has distilled this 10 year old single malt under the name of Aerstone. The product gets it’s “sea cask” name from the fact that the whiskey is aged by the sea and absorbs some of the flavors of that area. One might expect Sea Cask to mean briny, peaty notes, but this malt is quite gentle and hardly maritime at all. Quite smooth, not sweet but it’s on the way there. While the nose is a hot, the palate features lots of caramel, vanilla, and almond. These barrels were aged on the Ayrshire coast, and there’s a just hint of the promised sea spray on the finish, but it’s very mild, giving the conclusion a slightly salty kick. My overall experience was a wholly approachable, straightforward single malt that’s priced closer to a blend. It’s not transcendent, but it’s a nice smooth sipping whisky that you can also mix in place of say, JW Red. At this price point ($30), I consider it a bargain.
